Nike unveils 6 hot new designers tonight at the Doernbecher Freestyle Event!
You know how kids are resilient and joyful and just super creative? Leave it to a kid to come up with the coolest way to bring awareness and support to an amazing hospital. When Michael Doherty, Nike's Creative Director of Global Brand Presentations, was trying to find a new way to raise visibility to Oregon’s Doernbecher Children’s Hospital he brought the conversation to his son Connor who came up with the concept of what became the Doernbecher Freestyle program. Now in its 13th year, Connor’s idea has grown and has raised $14 million dollars for the hospital!
Nike designers team up with 6 inventive, fun and inspiring young patients at the Children’s Hospital to come up with unique designs, where they do everything from choosing materials & color to placing images that are meaningful to them. The shoes and apparel are available for purchase and 100% of the proceeds go to the hospital.
This is Braylin, an actress and 10 year old patient at Doernbecher. She wants to help the hospital, and the doctor she loves, and to help other kids.
Her story, like all of the 6 patient-designers, is charged with joy and hope and thankfulness. When we mix the sound on the videos that will play at the event, there’s not a dry eye in the house. Their stories are moving and it brings so much joy to see how these kids deal with the challenges they face. This years 6 creative and inspiring patient-designers for the 13th annual Doernbecher Freestyle program:
