Not too long ago we were tapped by our friends at Wieden + Kennedy to work on a slice of the fantastical and inspirational Greg Jennings “Believe in Your Smellf” campaign for Old Spice.
W+K was finishing up edits at McKenzie Cutler on some new spots featuring Green Bay Packers wide receiver Greg Jennings, and (as is often the case) some additional lines needed recording, as well as some ad-libs and a few production lines needed replacing. The challenge was how to get Greg into a studio during the height of training for the 2012-13 football season. There wasn’t time to get him from Green Bay to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, let alone NYC or LA. Despite a tight practice schedule, Greg was going to be able to sneak away to Wisconsin Public Radio station WHID 88.1 FM, located on the University of Green Bay campus.
We knew this wasn’t going to be a traditional “stick Greg in front of a mic” kind of session. Greg would need to watch the spots to match his on-camera performances and interact with the creative team back in Portland in real time. So with the help of Wisconsin Public Radio Regional Manager Ellen Clark, WPR audio engineer Scott Clark, and Milwaukee’s leading remote audio engineer John Egan, we were able to transform the WPR radio studio into a full-blown looping stage with Eric Stolberg running the ISDN session from Portland.
Now, it wasn’t exactly a conventional ADR session, but with Greg’s professionalism, his sense of humor and his rapport with W+K creatives Jason Bagley and Craig Allen, the gig went swimmingly. “It was a lot of fun putting together the pieces to make this happen. Obviously, the technology here to do these kinds of things, but it was putting together the right players that made this sing”, said Eric. “Oh yeah, and Greg is really a funny guy”.
We’re extremely pleased to share the new Old Spice spot “Film” with you. Expect to see more greatness from the W+K, Old Spice, and Greg Jennings triple-whammy soon!
